VILLAGES across Wales with a population of 5,000 and under are being called to action as the deadline for entries to the 2009 Calor Village of the Year for Wales contest approaches.

The closing date for entries is Friday, May 29, and, with an increased prize fund of £15,000 on offer, the incentive for communities to take part has never been greater.

One winner for Wales will be awarded a minimum of £9,000, which can then be invested into community projects.

Last year Froncysyllte, near Wrexham, won the contest.

Calor Village of the Year manager Suzanne Weir said: “Just taking part can be of enormous benefit to villages – it offers them a chance to ‘health check’ their community by putting down on paper what they do well, what they could do better and what they offer to both residents and visitors.”
