A MAN and a woman were left clinging to the bonnet of their car as a thief drove off.
Cheshire police are appealing for witnesses to the terrifying ordeal after the woman was run over in Old Hall Lane, Elton, at 7.20pm on Thursday.
One offender knocked on the door of the property on Old Hall Lane and told the man and woman inside, both 37, there was someone in their garden.
Cheshire Constabulary spokeswoman Jo Preihs said: “When they went to check, the offender stole the keys of the car, a grey ‘O’ reg Mazda 6, and locked himself inside.
“He then started the vehicle and the two occupants attempted to stop him driving off by jumping on to the bonnet of the car. “The offender then began to drive the car away, knocking the female to the ground. He then drove over her and continued to drive away.
“The male occupant of the property remained clinging on to the bonnet of the car for a short distance before he too fell from the vehicle.
“The car was driven down Old Hall Lane and turned right on to Ince Lane.”
The woman suffered a head injury, believed not to be life threatening, and the man sustained a minor leg injury.
Both were taken to the Countess of Chester Hospital, with the man released on Thursday night and the woman kept in overnight as a precaution.
Ms Preihs added: “They were both shaken by the incident.
“The offender behaved recklessly by continuing to drive the car away while the victims were on its bonnet and the consequences of this incident could have been far more serious.
“The victims could have suffered considerable injuries or lost their lives, the penalties for which would be very serious for the offender.”
The offender is described as white, in his early to mid-20s with thin, long brown hair. He was believed to be wearing a light-coloured top and jacket.
Police are appealing for witnesses to this incident or anyone who has seen a grey ‘O’ reg Mazda 6 being driven erratically at that time to call DC Vicky Lee on 01244 615574.
