STRIKE action will close Ellesmere Port Library and Hope Farm Library this Saturday (March 24).

Almost half the West Cheshire libraries normally open on Saturday morning will also keep their doors firmly shut as librarians – members of Unison and GMB – want the council to reopen negotiations on new staff terms and conditions due to come into force on April 1.

The following libraries will be closed:  Ellesmere Port, Hope Farm, Chester, Winsford, Barnton, Blacon, Frodsham and Helsby.

The following will be open: Neston, Willaston, Great Boughton, Hoole, Lache, Sandiway, Upton, Weaverham  and Wharton.

Cllr Stuart Parker, executive member, culture and recreation, said: “I would like to apologise to members of the public who may be inconvenienced by this industrial action on what is normally a very busy days for our libraries.

“Closure has been a last resort and only when we have been left with no choice for operational or health and safety reasons.”

The unions are planning similar industrial action on Saturday, March 31.
