WREXHAM Athletic Club’s Dave Edwards is to be honoured for his coaching work.

Dave has given 15 years of his life to training youngsters as well as officiating at competitions and organising home fixtures and events in his role as the club’s track and field secretary.

And, following the Welsh Athletics AGM in Abergele, the governing body for the sport in this country has agreed to bestow on him a Meritorious Service Award.

Four Wrexham starlets have been named in Welsh Athletics National Development Squads.

The squads aim to assist athletes who have the potential to represent their country at Under 18s or U20s level in 2009 and at senior level in the future.

Hannah Thomas (sprints, jumps), Thomas Cusworth (sprints), Megan Rogers (sprints, hurdles, jumps, combined events) and Robyn Purchase (throws) are the talented quartet.

Eight Wrexham veterans will be part of the Wales squad that goes for glory at the Masters Home International Cross Country Championships in Swansea later this month.

Darren Rowlands (M40), Mike Robbins (M60), Peter Norman (M70), Alison Whitelaw (W50) and Margaret Docking (W55) will definitely compete, with Arthur Egan (M60), Helen Davies (W45) and Ros Adams (W50) acting as reserves.

Alison and clubmate Bernie Jones will manage the Wales team.

Catherine Hewitt was the W45 winner and the 16th woman home at the Snowdonia Marathon in overall 215th (3.43.27hours). Phil Walker was 438th (4.04.58), Charles Ashley 688th (4.18.58) and Andrew Walker 881st (4.49.11).
