ELDERLY residents have been keeping active thanks to a highly interactive games console.
Nintendo Wiis are in use at Plas yn Rhos Sheltered Accommodation and Day Centre in Rhosllanerchrugog.
Wrexham County Borough Council invested in the consoles to help older residents keep more physically and mentally active as part of the authority's strategy for Older People.
Carol Edwards, manager of Plas yn Rhos, has seen a big difference in the groups that gather daily in the main room. She said: “Not everyone wants to have a go but they're all interested to see what’s going on.
“We have some tenants who are generally more active than others but that doesn't mean that the rest of them can't join in with the banter.
“Traditionally, we play bingo, cards and do arts and crafts but the interaction that comes with the new Wii is bringing a whole new dimension to how they socialise.”
Liz Read is a wheelchair user, but that hasn't stopped her improving her upper body co-ordination. Her favourite game is bowling.
She said: “It's good exercise because normally I'd be doing a crossword or some art work. I'm increasing my physical activity and having fun at the same time. I think if I came here every day I'd become addicted!”
Funding for the scheme was provided by the Welsh Assembly Government and it is hoped more consoles will be bought in the future.
