PENSIONERS can take advantage of free swimming sessions in Wrexham starting this week.

All general public swimming sessions throughout the county borough are now free to people over 60 years of age.

The scheme is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, working in partnership with Wrexham County Borough Council, and aims to give the over 60s a better quality of life by encouraging more physical activity.

Alan Watkin, chief leisure, libraries and culture officer, said: 'Wrexham is very pleased to be taking part in the scheme.

'We are expecting large numbers of people to take advantage of the free swimming especially the sessions aimed specifically at older people.

'It is well known that regular exercise helps to reduce illness and benefits general health and well-being.'

Advice and help on swim fitness programmes are also available.

Free swimming is applicable in term time only and swimming lessons must be pre-booked.
