A SIX-FIGURE sum has sealed a deal for The Co-operative to extend their backing of the National Leagues for a further year.

It means the Manchester-based group will continue as title sponsor until the end of the 2009 season.

Liz Matkin, The Co-operative’s sponsorship manager, said: “We are very excited by the RFL’s plans for developing the National Leagues over the coming years and we are delighted to continue our support of the competition.

“We are committed to Rugby League and see this as part of our long-term plans to be involved in the sport.”

Last week the RFL announced clubs in The Co-operative National Leagues are considering a form of licensing, similar to that in engage Super League, to improve standards both on and off the field.

Also proposed is a ‘Magic’ weekend in the style of that enjoyed in the top division with all matches in a round taking place over a weekend at one venue.

From next year, clubs will be playing for a total prize pool of £200,000 – £100,000 going to the winners of the NL1 Grand Final.

Paul Kimberley, the RFL’s commercial director, said:

“The Co-operative are an extremely active sponsor who have not only significantly raised the profile of the National Leagues but also the sport as a whole.”
