LLANDUDNO produced the first shock of the new campaign in North Wales as they defeated last season’s Division Four (North) runners up Nant Conwy 20-17 on their own ground.
Outside-half Rhodri Carlton-Jones scored all but five of his side’s points with a try, two penalties and two conversions, with second row Matt Jones completing the visitors’ scoring with a try.
The home side managed two tries through flanker Carwyn Ellis and scrum-half Eilir Thomas. Both were converted by outside-half Peredur Ellis, who also kicked a penalty. The only consolation for the home side is that under the new points system this season is that they claimed a bonus point for staying within seven points of the winners.
Regaining Division Four (North) champions Mold continued their winning start with a 35-3 home success over Dinbych, with scrum-half Jamie Griffiths contributing a try, two conversions and three penalties.
Further tries came from wing Andy Jeffreys, flanker Gavin Taylor and outside-half Dan Edmunds. Outside-half Tony Jones responded with a penalty for the home side.
Caernarfon beat visitors Colwyn Bay 37-22 with second row Alan Mark Roberts scoring three of his side’s five tries. Scrum-half Tristan Griffiths and full-back Sean Crabtree also went over with outside-half Kelfyn Morris adding two conversions and three penalties.
The Bay’s tries came from prop Ollie Platt and back rows Mark Earl and Alan Thackery.
Ruthin overcame Dolgellau 37-0, with wing Gethin Hughes crossing for two tries and one apiece to full-back Kyle Davies, wing Huw Parry, scrum-half Lloyd Stradling and outside-half Adam Robson. Robson added two conversions and a penalty.
Llangefni were in high-scoring mood at home to Llanidloes with a 49-6 win, skipper Will Bown and wing Iwan Davies scoring a brace of tries each. Further tries came from flanker Iestyn Dafydd, wing Ioan Davies, scrum-half Dylan Pritchard and full-back Arwel Roberts. Outside-half Matthew Parry kicked a penalty and three conversions.
Bala were the top scorers of the day in the division as they crushed visitors Newtown 57-7, wing Geraint Davies scoring three tries.
Pwllheli, playing their first game of the season after relegation to Division Five (North), declared their intentions of bouncing straight back as they ran in 13 tries to crush Bangor 83-5.
Wing Mike Adam led the rout with five tries.
