NORTHWICH Rugby Club are still more than two weeks away from the start of the new season – but they have already got their hands on some silverware, writes Dave Goodban
The Blacks entered two sides – the Harts and the Stags – in the Oldham 10-a-side tournament on Saturday, and the first-string Harts defeated Stockport 19-12 in the final.
The tries came from brothers Richard and Chris Dale, and Jonathan Simpson bagged the winner. New signing Matt Bebbington, who played for Chester last season, converted two of the tries.
Northwich chairman Sam Naylor believes Bebbington, a PE teacher at Wilmslow High School, will prove a fantastic addition to the first team squad.
Fly half Gary Bell, who missed most of last season with a thigh injury, appears unlikely to feature this year, but Naylor is confident the new man can fill the void.
He said: “Matt was particularly impressive at stand off on Saturday and he will play a pivotal role for us this season. He knows we’re ambitious and I’m sure he’s made the right decision joining us. We’ve made some good signings.”
And Naylor has paid tribute to coach Kevin Greaves ahead of his first full season with the Blacks. “Kevin has been a strong influence in the short time he’s been here,” he said.
“He places much greater emphasis on fitness and that is showing already. It was very clear on Saturday that the squad in general is fitter than they were at this time last season.”
Naylor added: “There is a great buzz around the club at the moment, particularly with the first team, and we want to hit the ground running when the season starts and have a big year.”
Northwich start the enw season on August 16 with a home friendly against Colwyn Bay.
