A MAN has been found dead following a gas leak at a block of flats in Neston.

The body of the 50-year-old was found in a stairwell of the building in West Vale at about 8am on Friday after residents evacuated the property amid fears of a gas leak.

Emergency services wearing breathing apparatus entered the property to help remove residents and identify the source of the leak. Shortly afterwards, when the building was declared safe to return to, the man’s body was discovered.

The death is currently not being treated as suspicious.

Cheshire Constabulary spokeswoman Shelley Williams said: “Police and other emergency services were called to the scene of a gas leak reported at 8.11am on Friday, March 15, in West Vale, Neston.
“In the interests of public safety, a block of six residential flats potentially affected by the leak was evacuated and the displaced residents were allowed to return to their homes after a short time when the utility company declared it safe.

“The road was closed to traffic for a short period while emergency services accessed the area.

“Sadly, a 50-year-old man was found deceased at the premises.”

She added: “The incident is presently not being treated as suspicious; however, the cause of the man’s death is currently unascertained.

“A Home Office post-mortem examination will be carried out in due course and the family of the deceased have been informed.”
