THE headquarters of the Barnton and Anderton branch of the Royal British Legion has closed after almost 50 years.
The club on Meadow Drive has been in use since 1960, but shut down on Thursday because of financial problems.
“It’s a cash-flow problem, a lack of customers,” said committee member Bryan Tarry. “There’s no money to keep it open – I can’t see there’s any chance of it reopening. It will be sorely missed, but the branch will be kept open.”
The club is owned by the branch itself, not the Legion, and Mr Tarry, who has been on the committee since 1974, said a new HQ could one day be built in the village if, or when, the premises is sold off.
He said: “Theoretically, as long as there’s a branch the money is held in trust for the branch. It could build a new HQ if the money’s there for developers and someone comes along with a good plan. But we’d still need people to use it.”
The ladies’ section will now meet at the Barn Owl, while a venue for other meetings has not yet been decided.
