NORTHWICH Rowing Club have Henley champions.
Their success, however, did not come at the main event, rather the veterans’ competition which has followed the Royal Regatta since 1994.
The Northwich Vets D eight, who recently won their national title, too, won the title over a 1,000m course.
“It was a marvellous, memorable weekend. They are now recognised as the best veterans D crew in the country,” said Northwich spokesman Carolyn MacRitchie.
The beat Crabtree, the Cambridge Old Blues boat, whose crew contained an ex-Olympic oarsman, in the final.
Northwich also contested the Veteran C class and won two rounds before getting ko’d in the semi-finals by Crabtree, this time with four Olympians in their ranks.
The Northwich heroes were Robert Jepson, Simon Crouchley, Geoff Sims, Ray Smith, George Perrin, Paul Clay, Matt Hackett, Doug Pickup and cox Jonty Moore.
Northwich’s Senior lV coxed four, double scullers Max Andrews and Alex Riddell (novices) and Sam Cloverley and Shane Dickinson (J15s) all won at the Burton Regatta on Sunday.
