THE woman who launched the major St Luke’s Hospice fundraiser, the Midnight Walk, has vowed to take part herself for the first time.

Claudia McLachlan suffers from breast cancer and has been unable to join in any of the three walks so far.

But she is determined this year will be different and will join Julie Markman, who helped start the now annual event.

Julie is a therapist at the Winsford hospice, which needs a staggering £5,200 a day just to meet running costs.

Mum-of-two Claudia, 55, said: “We suggested the Midnight Walk to the staff at St Luke’s and they started work on planning it the next day.”

The event has proved an unprecedented success with numbers topping 500 in the first year and reaching 1200 in 2007.

The three walks so far have raised almost £600,000.

Claudia added: “This I year I aim to take part.

“The care offered by everyone at the St Luke’s is wonderful, but I didn’t realise how much money the hospice needs to survive.”
