BRYMBO’S North Wales League Premier Division title hopes were hit on Saturday as they were hammered at home by two-time defending champions Llandudno.
The 10-wicket whitewash ended the College Hill side’s seven-match winning run as they were bowled out for just 69. The table toppers cruised to 70-0.
Brymbo fell further behind Tudno on Monday when their showdown at Bangor was ruined by rain.
Llay Welfare went second in Division One with a 37-run derby victory at home to Gresford. Dave Broderick’s boys put on 203-9 and then dismissed their off-form neighbours for 166.
That followed Llay’s winning draw on Saturday at Marchwiel & Wrexham, who, chasing 202-7 (Mike Phennah 68, Broderick 65; George Forgrave 3-22) got as far as 154-4 (James Hughes 65, Tim Newhouse 40).
Marchwiel bounced back on Monday at relegation-threatened Brymbo 2nds, who declared on 163-9 only for Mario Swart (70) to fire Marchwiel to 167-4. Two days earlier Brymbo were thrashed by new leaders Denbigh, who set 235-2dec and then did the hosts for 58.
Gresford were beaten at home by Rhewl, who made it to 171-5 after Mike Richards (32no) and S Hussain (29no) hoisted the Clappers Lane outfit up to 170-7.
Llangollen beat rock-bottom Corwen, who were dismantled for 107 (Richard Hughes 5-16, Gareth Rigden 3-28) before skipper Tom King (38no) saw the home team to 111-3. Llangollen were brought down to earth on Monday at on-fire Rhewl, who eased to 101-3 following 100.
Chirk fell further off the pace after having to settle for a losing draw at Corwen, who held out on 127-6 after Chirk declared on 184-3, a knock inspired by captain Nick Flack’s 110no.
Division Two leaders Bersham suffered a shock 42-run home loss to Ruthin. Bersham fell for 121.
Phil Tulley starred as Marchwiel & Wrexham 2nds won their Division Three derby at home to Brymbo 3rds on Monday.
Charlie Croasdale (53) top-scored for Brymbo in their 138-7 total before Marchwiel made 139-5 (Tulley 77).
Heavy downpours prevented Marchwiel from batting on Saturday at Llanrwst 2nds, who were skittled for 121 (Raja Das 3-22, Josh Davies 3-25).
Brymbo 3rds lost their previous day’s derby at Castell Alun, who knocked off 64-0 (David Lloyd 37) after ripping the basement boys apart for 61 (Philip Lloyd 3-17)
But Castell Alun were beaten at home on Monday by Mynydd Isa, who hit 164-6 (Michael Arden 3-24) and then curtailed the Alun’s innings on 123 (Arden 50).
Gwersyllt Park gave their Division Four championship aspirations a lift with a 63-run success at Connah’s Quay 2nds on Monday.
The win followed Park’s home triumph on Saturday over Mold 2nds, who tallied 159-7 but could not stop Phil Huckridge’s side from flaying 160-6 (Ian Pearson 54).
Llay Welfare 2nds moved within touching distance of the Division Five title with a routing of Mynydd Isa 2nds.
Richard Beale (5-13) and Dan Parry (2-6) polished the visitors off for 28 before Llay swept to 29-0.
Gresford 2nds’ are down to third after their winning run came to an end at Bersham 2nds, who reached 184-4, thanks in no small part to John Read (89), in reply to 181 (Steve Griffin 69; Brian Walker 7-30).
Llangollen 2nds won their bank holiday weekend Division Six double-header with Rhewl 2nds.
Inspired by Rees Jones, they took Saturday’s meeting by 93 runs, laying down 161-9 (Jones 59) and bashing the hosts for 68 (Jones 5-9).
