TWO of the Vale Royal’s most promising athletes have been receiving more one-on-one training with Dame Kelly Holmes.
Charlotte Roach and Steve Stockton are members of the legendary Olympic and Commonwealth gold-medal winner’s ‘On Camp with Kelly’ programme and they met up with their idol at a training and educational day in Loughborough University.
The Vale Royal duo were given an introduction to the female athlete triad, a condition which can have serious implications for young female endurance athletes.
They also attended workshops on bone health, nutrition and hydration, took part in a training session and then received physiotherapy and massage advice.
Holmes said: “I ensure that I meet up regularly with the ‘On Camp with Kelly’ athletes to check on their progress and help them develop in their athletics careers by giving them mentoring support.
“Although I am in regular contact with the athletes by phone and text it is also important for me to see them face-to-face.
“The girls also enjoy meeting up and training together, they all go through the same things and are an important support network for each other.”
The programme was set up to give talented middle-distance runners the chance to follow in Holmes’ footsteps.
Roach, who has been a member of Vale Royal AC for six years, said: “Kelly is incredibly down to earth and highly motivated.
“She goes for everything she wants to achieve and has been through everything we do and we hope to do.
“She is also very direct and tells you want she thinks – an honest opinion is so much more valuable than a soft opinion.”
