Expectant mothers of a nervous disposition may wish to cease reading any further, as we reveal the eye-watering weight of the heaviest baby born at the Countess of Chester Hospital Trust over the past five years.

Laying claim to the honour was a bundle of joy who tipped the scales at 11lb 11oz, according to figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act.

The average weight of the hospital’s newborns between 2010 and 2014 was 7lb 8oz.

While at neighbouring East Cheshire Hospital Trust, the winning candidate weighed in at 12lb 3oz.

Babies weighing more than 8lb 13oz at birth are considered by some experts larger than average or macrosomic.

Trinity Mirror Data Unit

The Trinity Mirror Data Unit asked a selection of hospital trusts across the country to provide the weights of the heaviest babies born in their hospitals over the past five years.

Out of the 35 trusts which obliged, the heaviest was a whopping 15lb 14oz born at the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

Tam Fry, from the National Obesity Forum, said a macrosomic baby is usually the product of an overweight woman who continues to eat badly during pregnancy.

‘Eating for two’ is one of the ‘worst old wives’ tales surrounding pregnancy’, said Ms Fry, who advised women to get into a healthy weight range prior to conceiving.

She added: “If you are overweight on entering pregnancy there is a real chance that you will run health risks yourself, as well as compromising the future health of your child.”
