Frodsham Town Council has invested in the town’s youth by appointing its first junior mayors.

Weaver Vale Primary School pupils Corey Leigh and Abbi Smith were sworn in by deputy mayor Kyle McGregor and chairman of FTC Mark Warren during an assembly.

Year 5 pupils Corey and Abbi were elected by their peers after their winning speeches, where they spoke about how seriously they would take the role.

The junior mayors, who will represent the town’s younger generation at community occasions, kicked off their civic careers by turning on the Christmas lights with mayor Sara Wakefield on Saturday.

Cllr McGregor said: “Frodsham has always been known as a great place to bring up a family but we want it to be a great place to grow up as well.

“And this is one of the ways we can get our young people involved in democracy and the local community. In turn, they feel a sense of attachment to Frodsham.”

Cllr Wakefield is looking forward to working with her junior counterparts.

She said: “FTC decided to appoint two junior mayors in the hope that it will increase public awareness of the role of the mayor and the council, and make more of our civics.

“During my term I have met a lot of people who live here and didn’t know that Frodsham has a mayor, even though we have had one since 1992.

“It will hopefully help to educate our young people about local government and increase links between the council and the town’s schools.”

The mayorships will be rotated between Frodsham’s schools each year.

Headteacher of Weaver Vale Sue Mills said: “I am delighted with this very effective community link, where children from Weaver Vale will have a voice in the community.”
