Want to beat the bookies on day one of the Boodles May Festival at Chester Racecourse?

Every race-goer does, but picking winners can be tough.

So on the eve of the opening day of the new season at Chester, we are giving you a helping hand.

The Chronicle's long-serving racing correspondent Beverley Dee has gone through the seven-race card and picked out her top tips for Chester Cup day (May 4), so here are her seven to watch:

2.10pm Stellar Group Lily Agnes Conditions Stakes: Over the minimum trip of five furlongs, a low draw is an advantage. So our selection is FIERY CHARACTER, drawn in stall two.

2.40pm Arkle Finance Cheshire Oaks: For three-year fillies, many trainers use the race as a trial for the Epsom Oaks in June. Our selection is SOMEHOW, trained by AP O'Brien in Ireland, a winner on heavy ground in April.

3.10pm The Betway Chester Cup: With £120,000 in prize money, horses race over two miles and two furlongs here. Our selection QUICK JACK, who was second in the race last year, is accompanied by stable-mate Heartbreak City, who could spring a surprise.

3.45pm Boodles Diamond Handicap Stakes: Our selection is ROUDEE, drawn in stall one and will appreciate recent rain.

4.20pm Homeserve Conditions Stakes: The selection here is DUTCH MASTERPIECE, allocated top weight but ridden by arguably the best flat jockey in the world, Ryan Moore.

4.55pm Stallar Group Maiden Stakes: This is for horses yet to win a race. The selection is EXOTERIC, who got loose at the start on his only outing to date and finished fourth. Should improve for the experience

5.25pm Deepbridge Capital Handicap Stakes:
For this race, over one mile four furlongs, the selection is SOLDIER IN ACTION, ridden by Chester specialist Franny Norton.
