A TARPORLEY church wants young people to come and meet their new youth worker and discover the activities and facilities they have to offer.
The Storehouse Church has been based in the old Brook Farm School in Tarporley for the past three years.
The family-run Christian church has employed community youth worker Darren Gerrish to build up the church’s relationship with young people in the village.
Pastor Gary Atkin said: “We have a long-term interest in the site and we have a long-term interest in the village. With the employment of Darren, we should be able to bring much more to the village.”
Gary said: “When we moved here the villagers told us they needed somewhere for the young people to go. We wanted to fill that gap.”
The church runs two evening clubs for young people – the Wednesday night club is for those aged eight to 14 and the Friday youth cafe is for those aged 14-17.
Darren Gerrish explained: “At the Wednesday night club we do a variety of activities, including art, media such as making videos and playing sports on the field.
“The Friday night club offers young people somewhere to hang out, they can play table tennis or table football, play on the game consoles or watch TV.”
He added: “People often assume it is only church people who go along to these clubs but in fact there are more non-church youngsters than churched.
“At the Wednesday night club, of the 20 to 30 who come along 50% of those are non-church. For the Friday cafe, we have 40 people registered and only six of those are from the church.”
Gary said because the church building is a school they have a variety of facilities available to those in the village.
“We have a sports hall, lots of classrooms which we use as art rooms or entertainment rooms. We also have football teams come and use the sports hall, but we would like others in the village to use what we have.”
Gary said the majority of their church time is on a Sunday, the rest of the time is focused on the community.
He said: “I feel people are a bit concerned about what will happen when they come down here, we promise we are not going to throw a bible at them as soon as they arrive.”
