CAMPAIGNERS are calling for support for a project to reinstate Riversdale Swing Bridge, Northwich, for pedestrians and cyclists.
Up to 1,000 people used the bridge daily before its closure, mainly to get to schools and colleges. Its reopening could be brought about thanks to the Connect2 project, one
of a number competing for a multi-million pound grant from the Lottery's Living Landmarks: The People's Millions competition.
The winner will be decided by a TV vote in the winter and sustainable transport charity Sustrans is urging people to support it.
Regional manager Peter Foster said: 'We need residents to get behind the scheme, to ensure Northwich has the best possible chance of being part of Connect2 and of us gaining the support we need to succeed.
'We are asking people to register their support on our website, www.sustransconnect2.org.uk, or by calling the Connect2 information line on 0845 058 1373. Our deadline for receiving pledges is April 23.'
Mike Cooksley, chairman of the Weaver Valley Management Board, added: 'The reinstatement of the swing bridge will make it easier for a large number of short journeys to be made on foot or by bike.'
