A VOLUNTEER medic saved a man’s life thanks to her quick response to an emergency call.
Anita Garwood, team leader for Farndon Community First Responder (CFR) team, received a pager message stating a guest had collapsed at Carden Park Hotel.
Arriving on scene within minutes, Anita responded to the gentleman who had suffered a cardiac arrest by shocking him with a defibrillator.
An ambulance took the patient to hospital by ambulance soon afterwards.
Anita said: “I was not sure how serious the incident was until I arrived on scene to what looked like an extremely panicked environment.
“I ran up the stairs and the patient was surrounded by people trying to help him, I cleared the area and started to shock the patient with my defibrillator but he was not responding. I shocked him again and this time heard him respond. I shouted with relief to the surrounding people ‘we have him back’.
“I immediately gave the man oxygen and continued with the Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation until the paramedic arrived.
“It was a brilliant feeling hearing the cries of relief from all concerned, I am delighted I was able to help.”
CFR groups work with the North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust (NWAS) responding to emergency calls in the rural area prior to the arrival of an ambulance.
Each volunteer medic undertakes a seven-week training programme with NWAS to gain a nationally recognised first responder qualification.
Gary Ashby, Community First Responder Manager for NWAS said: “This incident shows how important CFRs are to the community and how they can make the difference between life and death. Due to the nature of the man’s arrest he suffered, had Anita not arrived on scene when she did he would have died. “The reassuring role she played really helped to calm the situation until medical help arrived only minutes later.”
Anita was the only member of Farndon CFR team but thanks to a recruitment drive, Alison Gresty, Sharron Barclay and Fiona Henderson have joined the team.
