A multi-vehicle collision is causing disruption on the M56 westbound.
Motorists heading towards Chester are stuck in tailbacks following the incident between junction 11 for the A56 and junction 12 for Runcorn, which happened shortly after 10am.
North West Motorway Police tweeted that the crash involved seven vehicles.
A spokeswoman for Cheshire police said all vehicles have now been moved to the hard shoulder, so traffic should be moving again soon.
