FRODSHAM proved community spirit was shining brighter than ever last weekend, as more than 300 runners took to the streets for the town’s annual Downhill Run.

Runners ranging from toddlers to pensioners old hit the road for the popular 1.3 mile event which finished up at the Rotary Club’s Festival in the Park.

At just a year old, Poppy Ross was the youngest participant, while Dilys O’Neill aged 80, was the oldest.

The race, organised by the Frodsham Community Association, was started at the Memorial Field by Forest Hills Hotel by Weaver Vale MP Graham Evans before following a route to Castle Park down Howey Lane.

Councillors Lynn Riley and Andrew Dawson sponsored the event with funding from council budgets, with all proceeds going to Frodsham Community Centre.

After the race, participants relaxed and basked in the heat with the family entertainment that was on offer at the Festival, which was officially opened by Frodsham town mayor Sara Wakefield.

A variety of shows, presentations and displays were available during the afternoon, as well live entertainment which included attractions in the Arts Centre courtyard, as well as the main stage and the park grounds.

The runners were able to fill their rumbling tummies with bacon baps, hot dogs and burgers before special presentations were made to the winners of the race by Graham Evans.

Afterwards, local officials of The Royal British Legion made presentations to three army cadets for their fundraising work associated with the National Poppy Appeal.

Organiser Sue Thomson said:

“It really was a fantastic day – there were so many families out and about 50% of our runners were 11 years old.

“We must also thank the tremendous team of volunteers who made all the arrangements to ensure the Downhill Run was a safe and happy event.

“We welcome feedback on the event and would also be very pleased if anyone would like to help with the plans for next year.”

She added: “And talking of Frodsham Downhill Run 2014, we are delighted that next year’s run will be sponsored by Frodsham & District Round Table.

“If anyone would like to be notified they should email me at events@frodshamcc.co.uk.”
