SPORTING champions at Acresfield Primary School have been nominated in the Scottish- Power/Trinity Mirror Cheshire Your Champions 2007 contest.
The Upton school boasts an award-winning rugby squad after a teacher-in-training with no rugby experience created the team in 2006.
Miss Gilfoyle, now a member of staff, enlisted her boyfriend to help train the students. With weekly training, they reached the finals of the Chester Festival of Tag Rugby 2006.
A year later Miss Gilfoyle and her teaching assistant Mrs O’Reilly took over the training and entered the team in the 2007 Chester Festival.
The newly formed squad defeated a record 26 teams to win, and qualify for the National Tag Rugby Finals 2007 in Rugby, Warwickshire.
Headteacher Sue Smith said: ‘The final was an amazing experience for the Year 6s. Students with no sporting experience found themselves given preparatory training from professional coaches.’
Although the players lost to the more experienced Cornish champions, their team spirit was acknowledged with the National Fair Play Trophy at the finals.
Mrs Smith said: ‘The trophy was a wonderful surprise, and a well-deserved outcome for a super group of children and their coaches.’
