WORKERS at a Malpas cheese factory will take
redundancy after a dairy company made drastic changes to its operation.
Employees at Reece’s Cheese, Hampton, have been offered voluntary redundancy after Milk Link, which owns the company, announced it would have to make 93 job cuts across three of its cheese-processing facilities.
Milk Link acquired the Llandyrnog Creamery in the Vale of Clwyd from PriceWaterhouseCoopers after the co-operative Dairy Farmers of Britain went bust in May.
Now the company has carried out a review and announced drastic changes. They found the Llandyrnog cheese making and packing operations were loss making and the Hampton creamery had high and unviable staffing levels and suffered from considerable volatility in the volumes of cheese made. The company has decided to move the packing operation to Oswestry which will result in the loss of 93 jobs.
Across the three sites, a total of 30 people have expressed an interest in volunteering for redundancy.
Neil Kennedy, Milk Link chief executive, said: "We regret the impact this announcement may have on those who find themselves in a potential redundancy situation."
