PRIMARY school children have been taking part in a learning celebration at the University of Chester.

Year 5 students from Lache Primary, Overleigh St Mary’s, St Thomas of Canterbury, Eccleston Primary, Dodleston Primary, and Hoole Primary have been taking part in workshops based on the theme of the Olympics at Queen’s Park High School leading up to a learning celebration at the university.

During the workshops, students worked on different projects that linked to the Olympics.

These have included the Olympic ideal, opening ceremonies, China and Beijing, the science behind the Olympics and different Olympic sports.

These projects were planned jointly by teachers in the primary schools and Queen’s Park High School. Students showcased their work to parents, headteachers, governors and invited guests at the Learning Celebration.

The celebration was held at the University of Chester with the permission of vice-chancellor, Professor Tim Wheeler, who welcomed everyone to the university in a speech during the students’ graduation ceremony.

The vice-chancellor was presented with a graduation certificate and Olympic medals made by Year 5 students as a thank you for his support.

Emma Davies, primary liaison coordinator for Queen’s Park High School, said “The Year 5 students took part in the activities with such enthusiasm and were a real credit to their schools.

“The work they have produced is excellent. My thanks go to all the staff in all the schools who helped to plan the projects. The learning celebration at the University of Chester has been a great opportunity for us to recognise what students have achieved.”

Andrew Firman, headteacher at Queen’s Park High School, said: “I am really pleased that we have been able to work with our partner schools and the University of Chester to put on such an exciting event.”
