POLICE investigating an allegation of sexual assault in Ellesmere Port have thanked the public for their assistance.

Officers identified a 17-year-old boy who helped them with enquiries and as a result of the investigation, evidence collated did not support the allegation and no further action has been taken.

Police were called to Overpool Road in the early hours of Monday August 13 following reports of a serious sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl.

At the time, police cordoned off an area close to the Wheatsheaf Pub as part of the investigation, which has now concluded.

Detective Inspector Debbie Dodd said:

“We take all reports of sexual assaults very seriously and investigate them thoroughly while keeping in mind the need to be sensitive to the victim.

“The victim is supported by specialist officers from the start.

“In this case it transpired that there was no evidence to support the allegation,” she added.
