A DRUG-TROUBLED 25-year-old who assaulted his Polish girlfriend was sentenced to 16 weeks in jail.
Gavin Jones, of Ermine Road, Hoole, was also given a £25 fine and ordered to pay £400 compensation for assaulting his girlfriend of one month, Marlena Mazurkiewicz, of Thomas Brassey Close, Hoole.
Sue Gibson, prosecuting, said: ‘On the evening of Wednesday, April 4, Marlena phoned the defendant who said he was at a party but he would go to her house later.
‘It got very late and he still hadn’t arrived so she went to bed. She received a call after midnight from Jones saying ‘get out of bed I’m outside the door’.’
Jones entered the house and went into her bedroom. ‘He pulled back the bed clothes believing she was in bed with someone else,’ said Sue Gibson.
The couple then walked into town when Marlena said she wanted to stop the relationship.
Ms Gibson said Jones head-butted her and pulled her head down. He began kneeing her to the head several times.
She suffered bruising to her left eye, small cuts to her nose and bruising to the left side of her jaw.
Chris Hunt, defending, said: ‘He has grown up witnessing a substantial amount of domestic violence. My understanding is that if that’s the case then the person is likely to repeat it. He has problems with drugs and alcohol.’
Magistrates sentenced Jones on the evidence the defence put forward, that Jones was assaulted by the victim’s flatmate and that he ‘lost his temper and hit out’.
Mr Hunt added: ‘He does not accept he head-butted her and he kneed her in the face.
‘There’s an innate characteristic that needs to be nipped in the bud. He needs help to prevent a recurrence in the future.’
