WRITE ON! That's the message to villagers fighting the Haslington landfill site.

Richard Robinson, who led the Haslington bypass campaign in the 1980s, says the way forward is to swamp decision-makers with letters of protest.

He said: 'The bypass campaign was successful but not without a massive struggle at the time.

'Cheshire County Council and the Government were letting us slip down the list and delay after delay mounted up.

'But Haslington and Winterley residents played a major part in winning the fight to get the bypass ahead of other schemes.

'Letter-writing played a key role as councillors and ministers were overwhelmed with local correspondence.

'Literally, bags full arrived in appropriate offices and had a major influence on decisions.'

Mr Robinson, who was Bypass Action Group leader, believes the same tactics will persuade John Prescott to hold a public inquiry into the landfill scheme.

He added: ''We know that it is now Government and EU policy to try and avoid landfill, so there could be no better time to complain about the siting of this proposal with all its inherent environmental and traffic related issues for the locality.

'Traffic around the Crewe Green end of the bypass is bad enough already and the site could be used to serve the North West as well as all of Cheshire.'
