A couple from Plas Newton have had a diamond time after 60 years of marriage.
Bob and Gwen Wingfield, who are both Chester born and bred, were married on March 10 1956 at St Mary’s Without the Walls in Handbridge but kept their family celebration until May 1 to mark Gwen’s 85th birthday on April 24 and Bob’s 90th birthday on May 7. They celebrated with family at Upton-by-Chester golf club.
Bob worked at Capenhurst nuclear processing plant and Vauxhall Motors and saw active service in the Royal Navy during the Second World War and the Malay Emergency. Gwen was a school meals driver for the former Cheshire County Council.
They have one son Ian, married to Alison with a step-daughter Ellie, and two grandchildren Zen and Tia.
He said: “I think their secret to a long and happy marriage is understanding, patience and a positive outlook.”
The couple have received a telegram from the Queen congratulating them on their 60 years of marriage.
