Nick Crawshaw believes the police are ‘out to get him’, a court heard.

The 23-year-old has claimed the force have treated him unfairly throughout their investigation.

Crawshaw, of West Street, Hoole, is on trial for six counts of rape, three of sexual assault and two charges of assault by penetration between 2010 and 2012 from eight alleged victims.

Two officers from Cheshire Police’s Dedicated Rape Unit gave evidence to the retrial on Wednesday (October 12).

In a police interview Crawshaw claimed he would deny the allegations put to him, but they would ‘just come back and charge me anyway’.

PS Lianne MacFarlane has since left the DRU, but was in charge of the investigation relating to a number of the alleged victims.

Warrington Crown Court where the trial of Nicholas Crawshaw, of West Street, Hoole, is taking place

Simon Mills, prosecuting, said: “One of the reasons you’ve been called to the witness stand is the defence has claimed your investigation has been unfair to Nick Crawshaw and the police are out to get him.

“How do you respond to that?”

PS MacFarlane said: “The investigation has been conducted fairly and properly.

“We have always asked him what he wants to follow up and he has never given us a specific answer.

“We follow up all lines of enquiry whether it means it supports him or it doesn’t support him.”

DC Maureen Deakin was also called as a witness.

Mark Le Brocq, defending, suggested she had lied when she told Crawshaw everything the police had found was passed on to his defence team.

He said: “That was a lie wasn’t it? You misrepresented the truth.”

DC Deakin said: “It’s not a lie, but an untruthful one.

“Everything we had during the the investigation was passed to the Crown Prosecution Service. It is up to them what gets passed on to Mr Crawshaw’s team.”

Judge Tina Landale asked the defence to clarify whether they felt they had not received any documents they believed they should have.

Mr Le Brocq said it was ‘possible’ a couple of statements regarding two of the complainants' counselling had not been disclosed at the time of the interview, but otherwise they did not have any complaints.

Crawshaw denies all of the charges against him.

The trial at Warrington Crown Court continues.
