A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a fire in a restaurant caused early morning commuter chaos.

Five fire engines, police and ambulances sped to the scene of the fire at Convivio, Grosvenor Street yesterday (September 28).

A 26-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of arson yesterday afternoon and bailed until November 23.

The road at the Grosvenor roundabout into Grosvenor Street and at the junction of Lower Bridge Street were cordoned off by police to enable the fire service to tackle the blaze at Convivio Restaurant on Grosvenor Street.

Yesterday, Cheshire police spokeswoman Shelley Williams warned motorists to avoid the area.

Crew from both Chester and Ellesmere Port fire stations rushed to the scene at 7.11am after reports of smoke poring from the first floor of the building.

A spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue said: “Five appliances attended the scene, and a hydraulic platform was also used.

“The property covers three floors, and the fire started in the heating roof space.”

The roads surrounding Convivio were re-opened at around 11.30am yesterday.
