Officers became concerned for his welfare on the A540 bridge, at the exchange with the A494 and M56 on Thursday (August 11).
Police were called to the scene at about 9.30pm.
The M56 was shut in both directions for almost an hour before the man was brought down safely.
Both the A540 and A5117 were also closed, with motorists advised to find other routes.
A Cheshire Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called shortly before 9.30pm to reports of a concern for safety of a 46-year-old man on the M56.
“Diversions were put in place while police dealt with the incident and the motorway was reopened at about 10.30pm.
“The man is now safe and well.”
