YOUNGSTERS looking for a place to unwind now have a dedicated facility available for them in Lache.

The Chilaxing Juniors Club, based in the Lache and Handbridge Young People’s Centre, Hawthorn Road, caters for children aged eight to 13.

Youngsters came up with the name Chilaxing Juniors for the club on its launch night, with ‘chilaxing’ being a combination of two words – ‘chill’ and ‘relaxing’.

Facilities available include 10 computers with access to the internet, a pool table, a table tennis table, a TV with DVD player and video games consoles, an arts and crafts area, cooking facilities and play area outside.

John Hickey, Lache warden supervisor, said the idea to organise something for children aged eight to 13 had received plenty of community support.

He said: “There had been a massive gap in the area, and the idea was to put a programme together for these children. It has been really popular, with 50 young people present at the club in week four.

“The club is run by volunteers and teachers are involved – in fact the teachers have been asking to help the past few weeks.

“We’ve had really good co-operation from service providers, it couldn’t be going any better at the moment.

“Our aim is to have the young people’s centre open for six days a week by Christmas.”

The club is also organising a programme of activities with a sporting theme for the summer holidays.

The Chilaxing Juniors Club is open every Tuesday from 6-8pm and is free to join, although a parent or guardian needs to complete a membership form before admission is granted.
