HELSBY Football Club is taking a stand against “mindless vandalism”.

Graffiti was daubed over the stand walls and dugout over the Christmas period.

The damage was discovered the following day shortly before Helsby’s game against Capenhurst Villa FC.

A club spokesman said: “We are shocked, upset and very angry about this latest episode of vandalism at Helsby Football Club.

“We will hunt down the criminals and will seek to prosecute those responsible. The police have been alerted and are now working with us to identify the perpetrators.”

Helsby FC says it has been the “victim of mindless vandalism” for several years now and “enough is enough”.

The spokesman added: “Two youths in Macclesfield were recently sentenced to six months for graffiti, and we intend to adopt the same hard line. Anyone found on our ground without the football club’s express permission will be liable to prosecution, and we will apply this strictly and with vigour.”

In another recent incident, vandals broke into the container shed behind the football stand and the corrugated metal was forcibly ripped off.

In the past, vandals have attempted to start fires at the base of the stand.

The club is investigating how security can be improved and a meeting is planned with the local police community support officer Chris Maddocks, who will undertake a Crime Prevention Audit early in the New Year.
