A FIRE ripped through a barn in Farndon containing 17 tonnes of hay and ammonia nitrate at 4pm today (Wednesday, October 8).

Fire crews from Malpas, North Wales and Crewe were called to the barn on Rowley Hill at 4pm to find it well alight.

Half the barn contained 17 tonnes of hay and the fertiliser ammonia nitrate.

A Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “The crews had to stand back for a while because of the size of the blaze and couldn’t enter the building. Large plumes of smoke could be seen coming from the building. Two hose reels were used to bring the fire under control.

“A monitoring ground crew were on standby due to the fertiliser in the barn. Nobody was injured in the blaze and the barn is still standing.”

The A540 Kingsmead road had to be closed as a precaution, but reopened within half an hour.

By 5.30pm the fire crews had got the blaze under control, and two of the appliances left the scene. The third appliance will stay until early evening to make sure the fire is fully extinguished.
