VISITORS to Chester city centre last night might have been fooled into thinking there was a major fire in a shopping centre.
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service deployed eight appliances to the Grosvenor Shopping Centre for a training exercise to test their response to large incidents.
Fire fighter Jim Payne of Blue Watch said: “We carried out a cluster exercise which we named Operation Grosvenor, designed to test our resources and planning should any major fires occur within the city walls.
“We started the exercise at 8pm, entering the precinct via St Michael’s Row with dummies to represent casualties and senior officers role-playing as members of the public and security staff.”
Two appliances from out of the area were on standby for real incidents while Blue Watch were also able to test some of their heavy-duty appliances.
Jim added: “We tested a high volume pump designed to take water from the River Dee as well as an aerial appliance.
“We finished the exercise at 11.30pm. Everything went very smoothly and our senior officers were very satisfied with the outcome.”
