A pond in a popular Green Flag park has undergone an early spring transformation.

Grounds maintenance staff from the borough council have been hard at work clearing the feature in Whitby Park.

The two week job saw a transformation of the area with equipment arriving to help dredge weeds from the bottom of the pond.

Advice about the wildlife was taken from the council’s total environment team and crucian carp and sticklebacks were found in the water.

The council says work to clear the debris in the pond will enhance the habitat for other wildlife in the future although an area has been left untouched for the resident moorhens. The wildlife area to the rear of the bowling greens, including a small natural pond, has not been disturbed.

Residents took to social media with various comments with Barry Bridge suggesting: “Great job by every one involved in this project. Will be great to see the pond looking good again. Spent many hours there as a young boy and later on with my young family.”

Barbara Donoghue added: “Brings back good memories of when we used to play in the park as youngsters.”
