An Ellesmere Port man has appeared in court following a dramatic incident in a packed supermarket yesterday .

Terrified shoppers were forced to evacuate the store as police rushed to Asda at Market Place, Ellesmere Port after reports of a man throwing wine bottles and in possession of a large knife.

A police officer received a deep laceration to his hand while a member of staff was taken to hospital after reportedly getting glass in his eye, during the incident at noon.

No other members of the public are thought to have been hurt in the alleged incident. which left a police officer needing stitches and facing future surgery.

Shoppers described the moment a siren sounded in the Market Square store before they were forced  to abandoned their shopping and evacuate as  police rushed to the supermarket, at around noon on Friday.

Customers tweeted pictures of hundreds of people waiting outside the store, which remained closed until 3pm following the alleged incident, while officers continued to guard the front entrance to the 24 hour superstore.

Seven police cars and an ambulance were seen arriving at the supermarket, as customers evacuated to the car park.

Shoppers on twitter described seeing an Asda worker walking to an ambulance with a large dressing over his eye.

On Saturday (March 8), Michael Luscombe, of Cannon Street in Ellesmere Port, appeared before Chester magistrates charged in connection with the incident at the supermarket.

The 59-year-old was charged with wounding with intent, common assault, affray and criminal damage.

Luscombe was remanded in custody and is due to appear back at Chester Magistrates Court on March 18.
