A near half million pound boost to sports facilities in Ellesmere Port is due to be unveiled on Friday, November 13.

The £438,000 investment at the Ellesmere Port Sport Village has seen the upgrade of an 18-year-old artificial grass pitch with a state of the art 3G surface.

The 100m x 62m pitch will be launched at 1pm on Friday with an official opening to be attended by Ellesmere Port & Neston MP Justin Madders (Lab), Simon Gerrard, chief executive officer of the Cheshire County FA and Little Neston and Burton councillor Louise Gittins (Lab), Cheshire West and Chester Council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure and wellbeing.

The project has been made possible thanks to a £250,640 grant from the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund which is delivered by the Football Foundation, the country’s largest sports charity.

Grassroots clubs

The new pitch will be used by grassroots clubs including Ellesmere Port JFC and local schools including West Cheshire College.

The borough council worked in partnership with the Cheshire County FA to secure the grant.

Since 2000 the Football Foundation Funding Partners’ investment has provided 293 grants worth £14.4m towards local level sports projects worth over £27.8m across the whole of Cheshire.

Founded in 2000 the Football Foundation is the largest sports charity in the UK.

It is funded by the Premier League, the FA and the Government via Sport England.

The foundation funds the development of new and refurbished local sports facilities in order to improve the quality and experience of playing sport at the grassroots level.

The Sports Village was opened earlier this year by Prince Edward.
