TARPORLEY Dental Centre is offering free mouth cancer checks during Mouth Cancer Action Week next week.
Only one in four people have heard of the disease, and yet every five hours somebody in the UK dies from it.
The Tarporley Dental Centre will be offering free oral cancer checks in an aim to raise awareness and provide people with the information that could save their lives.
Dr Jason Hopkins of the dental centre recognises how important these checks are: “Anyone can get it. People need to be more aware of the symptoms, such as ulcers that do not heal and red or white patches in the mouth”.
He upholds the message that mouth cancer charities will be spreading during the action week: “If in doubt get checked out”.
As a relatively unknown disease, the consequences of not having a check can be fatal. Every year 1,600 people die from it, and the chances of having mouth cancer are greatly increased by smoking and drinking.
Also, 25% of cases show none of the common risk factors.
If the cancer is detected early the survival rate is 90%, so a quick visit to the dentist can be potentially life saving.
If anybody is concerned and would like to book a free oral cancer check contact the Tarporley Dental Centre on 01829 732213.
