THE University Cathedral Free School (UCFS) will open to its first intake on Wednesday, September 4.
With seven months to go, demand from parents is high for reception classes after the closing date for applications last week.
The school’s sponsor UCAT also confirmed that a Year 1 and Year 2 class will open and further applications are being accepted.
Parents are encouraged to apply now as the school is expecting demand to exceed places available.
Pupils will be located in Abbey Square in the historic grounds of Chester Cathedral and will have access to the Chester Cathedral and University of Chester’s extensive facilities.
Set up in partnership between UCAT and Chester Cathedral, the UCFS will offer pupils a mandatory core of traditional academic subjects, complemented by art, music, drama and sport.
The school’s ethos and motto is a ‘Voice for Every Child’, promising to foster self-belief and confidence and high academic achievement.
The school will be led by principal Gareth Davies who has been a headteacher for 20 years and has left a post at a successful primary school in Switzerland.
The school will be overseen by a governing body including potentially the Dean of Chester Cathedral as the chair and the rest of the members will be from the University of Chester and parents and community representatives.
The school will open with a Reception and a Year 1 and 2 class initially building up each year with 30 more pupils until they reach their full cohort of 210 by 2017.
