A CHESTER woman has been sentenced to eight months imprisonment for benefit fraud.
Louise Gregory, of Dunham Way, Chester, appeared at Chester Crown Court, where she pleaded guilty to seven indictments of making false representations in order to claim income support and housing and council tax benefit.
Gregory, 36, failed to declare she was maintaining a common household with her husband, who was in remunerative employment and in a position to provide financial support.
She was overpaid benefits totalling £47,687.95 – a substantial loss to public funds, covering a period of four years and 10 months. The court sentenced Gregory to eight months imprisonment.
She is required to fully repay the overpaid benefit to Cheshire West and Chester Council and the Department for Work and Pensions.
Cllr Les Ford, executive member for resources, said: “This sort of offence is theft and will not be tolerated and the council will always pursue any attempt at fraud.”
