Chester city centre is gearing up to welcome tens of thousands of visitors on Sunday for the Chester Half Marathon.

More than 7,000 runners are taking part in the event, which begins at 9am at Chester Racecourse and organisers are calling on runners and spectators to arrive early to find the best viewing locations and avoid traffic or temporary road restrictions.

Andy White from race organisers Active Leisure Events said: “Organising a race of this scale is a mammoth task. Although the race itself begins at 9am on Sunday, we’ll be busy overnight on Saturday and through the early hours of Sunday morning getting everything ready to put on another world-class race day that will showcase our city to thousands of runners and visitors from across the country.

“It is a marathon effort by many – pun intended! – but we couldn’t do this without the understanding of our local communities along the race day route, plus the organisation and support of our amazing team, our volunteers, our sponsors and our race partners.”

The finishing line for the 34th Chester Half Marathon is in Northgate Street near the Town Hall thanks to an agreement with Chester’s Business Improvement District (BID), CH1ChesterBID.

Andy added: “Thanks to CH1ChesterBID, we have a grandstand finish in the heart of the city centre and the runners will be cheered home. We hope the thousands of finishers and racegoers visiting Chester on Sunday take the chance to enjoy everything our city has to offer.

“We’ll be doing our best to provide a race day experience people will never forget!”
