FORMER Chester footballing stars have expressed delight at the news City Fans United have been handed the lease of the Deva Stadium.

Gary Talbot, who scored 83 goals for the Blues during the 1960s and has recently been inducted into CFU’s Hall of Fame, said: “It’s fantastic news. I am so pleased for them.

“The CFU have worked so hard for this and I am really thrilled. Now they can have a football team and should have everything in place. I might have to get my boots out again! I will be giving them 100% support for the future.”

Chester goalkeeping legend Grenville Millington, the CFU’s inaugural Hall of Fame member, paid tribute to the support given from Cheshire West and Chester Council.

He said: “The news is what we all wanted to hear. The council has been extremely helpful, every step of the way.

“We have been told Chester is not a footballing city, but now the city of Chester can get behind the club fully like never before.”

Iain Jenkins, now assistant manager at Cowdenbeath, said: “It has been a difficult time over the past few years, and everyone’s now got to get the club back into the football league, where Chester belongs. It has been heartbreaking not to see Chester on the videprinter each week when the results come through.

“If the CFU get in touch with me and I think of coming back to help them, I would like to do it.”

Peter Jackson, who made 99 appearances for Chester City during the 1990s, said the decision was ‘brilliant news’.

He added: “I am really pleased because the CFU are keen people. They are dedicated to bringing the club back to life.

“It’s not going to be easy, there is a lot of hard work with stresses and strains, but I offer my best wishes for them. I would love to come over and watch a game and give a helping hand.”

Stuart Rimmer, Chester City’s record goalscorer, said: “I’m delighted for the group. They have worked very hard for this and they can move forward.

“I will, when I get the opportunity to do so, go and support them.”
