MORE than 800 children from Cheshire schools visited Chester Cathedral for Pilgrim Week.

The annual event aims to ensure as many children as possible get the chance to visit and become familiar with the cathedral, especially if they may not have had the opportunity previously.

The youngsters took part in activities such as hand bell ringing, learning sign language, calligraphy and dressing up as Benedictine monks.

At the end of each day, all the children gathered for a short act of worship where they were able to contribute what they had learnt in their workshop sessions.

Nicole Preston from the cathedral’s education department, which organised the event, described the week as being a ‘great success’.

“It was fantastic to see so many children making the cathedral their home,” she said.

“We received a huge number of positive comments from other visitors who were really pleased to see so many excited and happy children in the cathedral.”

canon Jane Brooke, Cathedral Canon chancellor added:

“Initiatives such as these are really important.

“Pilgrim Week is one way which enables the children from many schools to become familiar with this great building as well as giving them the opportunity to try their hand at a variety of different activities.”
