A SCHOOLGIRL from Chester has been selected to dance with a professional ballet company.
Madeline Duffield, 11, from Upton, will appear in the English Youth Ballet’s version of the charming story ballet of Coppelia at the Southport Theatre and Convention Centre next Friday and Saturday (November 9-10).
Madeline, who will play a lead villager in three performances, was selected from more than 200 young hopefuls at an audition in June.
All the youngsters in the cast will dance alongside EYB’s international principal artists while experiencing the life of a professional ballet dancer.
This includes an intensive 10-day rehearsal period when they are coached and mentored by the stars of the show.
Proud Madeline said: “The rehearsals are hard but I’ve learned a lot and made a lot of friends in the cast. It’s different to my classes because you have got professionals judging you.”
She feels ‘chilled out’ at the moment but is unsure whether she will be nervous on the day.
Madeline goes to West Kirby Grammar School and trains at Chester’s North West Dance Studios. When not dancing she is very busy with her acrobatic gymnastics. She competes for Wales Acrobatic Gymnastics based in Saltney.
Her mum Jodi, who is married to Andy and has a nine-year-old son Matthew, said: “For Madeline we were looking for an experience for her to perform in a ballet outside of classes and her teacher recommended it. We went along to the audition, which was fantastic to watch because we don’t often get to see her, we drop her off at the door and that’s it.
“She was selected, had a further audition and has been cast into one of the leading roles. Her confidence has gone through the roof.”
