Rowers and their supporters were out celebrity spotting on the weekend when one of the country’s top comedians made an appearance at the River Dee.
Fresh from his guest spot on The Graham Norton Show on BBC1 the previous night, Liverpool comic John Bishop was wrapped up warm to support his wife Mel in the Grosvenor Rowing Club’s Autumn Head.
Julie Cox, of Lache Park, was at the contest with her husband Richard to support her daughter Emily, who rows for Queen’s Park High School.
She said: “As we were waiting for Emily to race past we noticed John Bishop running along the footpath while his wife was rowing past on the river.
“I asked if he would have a photo taken with me and he kindly obliged to my excitement!
“He then quickly ran off to try and catch up with his wife.”
Julie’s daughter Emily came a very close second in the J15 double with Amy Williamson.
Bishop himself tweeted: “Mrs B has started rowing so now I am stood by a river in Chester freezing cold waiting for a race to begin. Being married is a strange thing.”
Amy James also tweeted a sneaky pic of ‘The Bish’ outside Hickory’s Smokehouse on The Groves. She tweeted: “@ChesterChron @JohnBishop100 yes spotted!! #stealthy.”
John Bishop will host this year’s Royal Variety Performance at the London Palladium on November 25 and broadcast in December.
He said: “As a child, the Royal Variety Show was like the Grand National and the FA Cup final - it was something our family always watched - the only difference being that we didn't bet on the winner.”
