A FAULTY valve on a water main caused a gushing geyser at Chester Golf Club which could be seen from miles around.

The valve on the 4ft-diameter pipe failed on Tuesday but was fixed by United Utilities yesterday (Wednesday).

The dramatic geyser shot into the air as the repairs were being carried out.

The pipe takes raw water from the River Dee, some of which supplies industrial plants, with the rest treated at Sutton Hall, Wirral, ready for distribution.

The Curzon Park club said it was initially difficult to establish who was responsible for repairing the leak but the burst had not affected the operation of the course as it was to the right of the practice area.
