ELDERLY residents who suffer from the 'horrendous' noise from nightlife are opposing applications for extended pub opening hours.

Friends of residents at Townbridge Court retirement home, on Castle Street, Northwich, say they are unhappy that pubs in the town centre could be granted longer opening hours.

They claim noisy drinkers leaving pubs late at night are disturbing them, and claim extended opening hours will en-courage drunken behaviour.

A friend of a Townbridge Court resident, who asked not to be named, told the Chronicle: 'The pubs are in a residential area, and are very closely surrounded by residential homes.

'The noise on a weekend is quite horrendous. Elderly residents should not have to suffer in their homes and then have to pay for cleaning up operations through their rates.'

But the owner of JW's Cafe Bar on Castle Street, one of the pubs nearby, has dismissed the claims and said an extension of opening hours would discourage binge drinking.

John Bates has applied for a one-hour extension from Wednesday through to Saturday, and said longer hours will give more choice of places to drink.

He said: 'The application has met with a lot of objection from Townbridge Court. I do understand their concerns.

'Some of the representations have tried to blame us for everything - but we are not the only bar in Northwich.'

He added: 'Extending the hours may have a positive effect - people will take their time drinking and there will be a wider choice of venues.'

Jerry Hart, chairman of Northwich Pubwatch, said a number of bars had met the borough council's Saturday deadline to apply to transfer existing licences - asking for longer opening hours at the same time - and said: 'I do not think extending opening hours will cause a problem. They will be staggered over the nights, they are not going to be open later every night of the week.

'Everyone takes into consideration where people live, but at the end of the day we are running businesses.'

Do you think the changes will increase rowdiness?
